Jal Jeera Masala- MDH
जल जीरा मसाला
Ingredients: White Salt, Black Salt, Dry Mango, Tamarind, Cumin, Malic Acid, Mint Leaves, Black Pepper, Musk Melon, Dry Ginger, Caraway, Chilli, Cloves, Asafoetida.
Use Jal Jeera Masala with Gol-Guppa and Pani Puri. Also use it for enhancing the flavours of Dahi-Bara, Chat, Papri and Papads. Add salt or sugar to taste.
Jal-jeera, is an Indian beverage, or else the powder used to flavour this drink. The beverage form is essentially lemonade and MDH Jal Jeera powder, and is a popular summer drink in India.
It is generally served with appetizers before a meal, but is also drunk between meals. Some versions do not involve any added sugar.A crisp concoction of tamarind water (jal) & cumin (jeera) flavored with mint, black salt, chillies & ginger. Each ingredient plays a role – tamarind & mint have cooling properties, cumin & black salt aid in digestion & chillies (optional) provide the essential indian kick. Many people use fresh lemon juice instead of tamarind pulp in their preparation and skip sugar.
Indian Tamarind is quite sharp & fibrous in taste as compared to the Thai variety. You need to soak it for few hours in water & mash to separate seeds & fibre to extract the pulp. Now a days – ready made tamarind paste is also available in indian stores. Quite tangy & smoky in taste, jal jeera is usually topped with boondi – puffed, crispy chickpea flour balls (available in indian stores) & crushed ice.
