In India they are called Massor Dal or Ulundhu. Red lentils have a delicate, nutty taste and are used to make soups, stews and pasta sauces, as well as delicious spicy dhals.
Red Lentil Split, husked (Masoor Dal) are a medium size quick cooking lentil. Red Lentils are deep orange to red in color and are about 1/2 to 3/4 cm. wide with a mild, earthly flavor and soft texture. Red Lentils are a hearty addition to casseroles, soups and stews. Season Red Lentils with spicy chile peppers, fresh herbs, garlic or curry powders. They're delicious in cold or hot salads; toss cooked, chilled lentils and diced roasted vegetables with a little olive oil.
